I was pleasantly surprised when I got Toby and
his 3 open wagons out of their box. I was expecting to find a
box on wheels with very little detail, but that is definitely
not what I found.
Whilst holding Toby the first thing you notice is
the weight meaning that Toby should have good traction resulting
in Toby being able to pull a reasonably long train. The detail
although no very refined is good. This lack of detail also gives
the model increased durability which is important when being
used by children.

Toby has a screw wound gear assembly which
increases its pulling power and its ability to move slowly but
reduces its overall top speed.
The Hornby Toby train pack comes with three truck, one more than
the Hornby Percy train pack. The open goods wagons, which come
with Toby, look good both when being puller by Toby or left on
the layout in the goods yard. I especially was impressed with
the detail of smiling faces on the front of each wagon. The
colour chosen for the wagons make them stand out from Toby. This
is an ideal train and wagon pack for a children’s layouts.
