Model Railway Rolling Stock
There are quite a few manufacturers of ready
built rolling stock. Hornby, Lima and Bachmann are the biggest in the UK (00
gauge). Everyone has read the reviews of a train by the manufacture, making
out theirs is the best. Well this page and the links above are designed to
give YOU a review based on actual performance. If you would like to review
your models please submit them to the forum or email: info@newrailwaymodellers.co.uk There are some things you can do
to improve the look of ready to run locomotives. This is covered on the Loco
Modification page.
Hornby probably the most common and readily available at the local toy
shop (Toy master, Toys r us). They make some very good locomotives, including
steam, diesel and electric. They are the only manufacturer to produce locos that
have working pantographs and the system of overhead wires that go with them. I
have four locomotives by Hornby. They are as follows:
I am new to Bachmann models at present don't know
much about them. I do know they produce some of the best models at the lowest
prices. At present I only own a set of wagons, but that will change. I am also
considering purchasing one of there Bombardier DMU's.
Lima tend to build exclusively modern diesel
locomotives and carriages. You can buy Lima models at any good model shops.
There detailing is always good with you often having to assemble little bits of
extra detailing (this is very easy). The motor they use has a distinct noise
which I quite like. They work well at low speeds and high speeds even though the
ones I have don't have 5 poll motors. One thing I have noticed with lima models
is that there wheels need cleaning often to keep there good performance and they
always need a run before they work well.
Traditionally Heljan produced
continental (European) models in HO gauge. more recently in 2002
Heljan moved into the British "Ready to Run" market and at
present produce Class 26s, 27s, 33s, 35s, 47s, 52s and 57sHeljan
announced that they will produce 58 17 and 53 in the near
future.
