Hornby Hornby 75 Ton Breakdown Crane
(weathered) Review
Hornby
75 Ton Breakdown Crane (weathered)
(R6204) Rating 6/10

The Hornby 75 ton breakdown crane is not just a model it’s also
a fully functional crane. By means of two manually operated
winches connected to
brass coloured chains, you can
raise and lower the cranes jib and raise and lower the cranes
hook. You can also rotate the jib, but when doing so you will
need to use the stabilising jacks as the weight of the jib will
topple the crane. He 75 Ton Breakdown Crane comes complete with
4
stabilising jacks, two riding trucks and a matching truck to
support the jib in transit.
To make this model functional Hornby have had to sacrifice true
to life detail. Saying this I don’t think they would have sold
any of these models unless it was functional. Its functionality
makes it a great buy for little
kids (and us big kids) to play out crash scenes. With crashing
comes recovery and what better than having an excuse to use a
breakdown crane to pick the train up and put it back on the
rails, or to help rebuild the signal box that was destroyed in a
storm and to clear the track of fallen trees.
The detailing on the crane wagon is poor. The two riding trucks
are well detailed as well as the jib supporting truck. The brass
coloured chain is a nice touch which gives it a more realistic
look.
This model has not had much if any improvement over the years
and is now looking a bit dated. I personally feel that Hornby
could have improved the detailing and made this model more true
to life. Improvements seem to have been made to the trucks,
which come with the crane, but not to the crane its self.
Overall I would say it is a good buy for someone that wants to
play with the crane but this model is more akin to a toy than a
model. I also feel the price of £35 RRP (£30 online) is too high
for such a poorly detailed model.
